读者 Calvin Law 问下面一句为什么用 came home happy 而不是 came home happily？

Tom came home happy on Saturday afternoon because he could finally enjoy himself after the lesson.

形容词用以修饰名词，副词用以修饰动词，这是英语语法里两条基本的法则。表面上，Calvin 的句子，好像违反了语法，但细想其意思，便发现当中的道理并非如此。

我们先看两例：

John is only 5 years old but he looks big for his age.

The steak is overcooked and it tastes burnt.

例子中，"he looks big" 和 "it tastes burnt" 中动词后面都接上形容词而不是副词，因为 big 和 burnt 分别修饰的对象是主语（代名词）"he" 和 "it"，而不是 "looks" 和 "tastes" 的动作。

同理，在 "came home happy" 一句，happy 也是修饰 Tom 这个人。当然，"came home happily" 也是对的，但意思跟 "came home happy" 不一样，前者说的是回家的过程，而后者说的是回家后 Tom 的感觉。
