读者Elinore在Harry Potter小说又看到另一句：

He did not see how he could possibly explain to Hermione that what she had done to offend Ron was kiss Viktor Krum ...

Elinore想知道为什么was之后是kiss而不是kissing或者her kiss with？

句中what she had done to offend Ron was kiss Viktor Krum其实应该是what she had done to offend Ron was to kiss Viktor Krum，只不过把to省略了。

更重要的似乎是省略的问题。不定词的to在什么时候应保留，什么时候可省略？根据我的观察，英语在这方面正在变化。以前遇到同样句型，倾向保留to，现在省略的居多。
