Edge 是边缘。 一张纸可以有边,窗台也有边,甚至悬崖也有边。我们说 on the edge 的时候,是指这些实物的边。
例如:
A small ant is crawling along the edge of the table.
Don't walk on the edge of the cliff. It could be dangerous.
On edge 说的则不是实物的边缘,而是一种心理状态。一个人累了,然后喝了几罐红牛,再加上公私两忙,就难免心情紧张,动不动就大动肝火,又或者心神恍惚,战战兢兢,这种心理状态就是 on edge。
某甲近日和女朋友吵架,结果做事常常犯错,答非所问,老板得知原因后,把他召入办公室训话:
You'd better shape up, or out of the door you go. That'd give you a reason to be on edge.
别以为跟女朋友吵架有什么大不了,掉了工作的时候你就会知道什么叫 on edge。
