有时选择 verb infinitive 和 gerund 时，要看句子的前半部。有一些词组，后面必定要跟 gerund，例如：

1. I am interested in learning English.

2. Her teacher is tired of hearing complaints from her.

3. We look forward to seeing you when you come in the summer.

4. Who is in charge of cleaning up after the party?

这些句子，一律不可以用 verb infinitive。

还有一些字，如 stop，用 gerund 或 verb infinitive 的意思完全不一样。John 和 Peter 争吵了半个钟头，然后：

John stopped to consider what Peter had to say.

John stopped considering what Peter had to say.

前一句指 John 终于停下来去思考 Peter 说的话。而第二句中，John 听腻了 Peter 的话，不想要再考虑 Peter 所说的。两句的意思是刚刚相反，使用时要注意。
