为何要保护眼中的苹果?apple of one’s eye

眼中的苹果。喻掌上明珠或珍贵的物品。

出自《圣经》。《旧约·诗篇》第17章：保护我就同保护眼中的瞳仁，将我隐藏在你翅膀的荫下。(Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of the wing.)在《旧约·申命记》中也有同样的说法：耶和华遇见他在荒凉旷野野兽吼叫之地，就环绕他，看顾他，保护他如同保护眼中的瞳仁。(He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wildness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.)瞳仁似苹果，是眼中最珍贵部分，后人遂以眼中的苹果表示珍爱的人或物品。英国著名作家狄更斯(Charles Dickens, 1812-1870)在他的《老古玩店》(The Old Curiocity Shop)中曾使用此语：“我的心肝，我的土地，我眼中的苹果，嘿嘿!
